ViewSonic VX1654 Portable Monitor Review: A Gaming Monitor with Limited Features

ViewSonic VX1654 portable monitor

The ViewSonic VX1654 portable monitor is a lightweight 15.6-inch IPS display designed primarily for gamers who want to be able to transport it from place to place and still get enough frames for smoother gameplay without any problems. Being a 144 Hz refresh rate and the AMD FreeSync compatible monitor player gets the promise of not to get the screen tearing effect besides the fact that games are fast and speedy. Notwithstanding, the VX1654 is strong in some aspects; its overall performance and build quality are quite poor.

At first , the ViewSonic VX1654 is a stand- out choice with 1080p resolution and high refresh rate, both of which make it look good for portable gaming. The 144 Hz refresh rate is what makes the monitor one of the main performance ideas in the price bracket. It works closely with FreeSync to synchronize the GPU render cycle so that frame skipping, and the tearing of the screen is minimized. This feature is what addicts need to buy since they are able always to see clearly as they do on their home screen.

The inadequate design is something that might turn the VX1654 into a disaster if not resolved. It is light indeed, just 1.5 pounds, but the build is not satisfactory at all. The sound is always present indicating the lower quality of the materials. Moreover, the build is based on the hollow plastic frame which can be easily broken. Also, it is worth mentioning that it gives a lower durability grade than portable electronic digital assistants like the Arzopa A1 at the same selling price. Nevertheless, ViewSonic has a soft carrying case that can be used to keep stress under control while traveling with the monitor.

The VX1654 boasts an IPS panel that mostly nails colors but has a problem in terms of accuracy. The monitor is able to show proper colors but due to the poor accuracy, it is impossible to distinguish them correctly. To color accuracy, the chemically treated liquid crystal within a liquid crystal cell (cell) effectively prevents crosstalk and the electrons impinging on the liquid crystal. The color result is only 27.8% of DCI-P3 and 39.2% of sRGB if you compare it when the monitor is opened out of the box with color potentials. Also, after the color settings had been adjusted accordingly, the color coverage of the monitor increased a bit though it was still short of what many users would have liked to see on a gaming monitor.

The screen was doing quite well with a refresh rate but it had to sacrifice the excellent color performance that would have been perfect for those that create graphic actions or watch multimedia as they are very touching and creative. This screen, by the way, was very fast in changing images but it was not successful to be a digital artist’s canvas due to its lack of color realism.

Audio is an area where the VX1654 falls short in, it’s not ideal for sound. The built-in 0.8-watt speakers by VX1654 are a low point of this display. The distortion manifests at high volumes causing them to become useless. The audio quality is below average from the VP1654 monitor. It did not get the desired goal in understanding the game performance from the multimedia performances side.

The ViewSonic VX1654 portable monitor is likely not going to make an impression on you with its audio, but its 144 Hz refresh rate and FreeSync support are definitely going to have you covered for gaming. Unfortunately, this product is not perfect when it comes to the physical measurements, set up, color accuracy, and even audio performance. If one is on a budget, they can take the ViewSonic VX1654 portable monitor, even though its weak build quality, color accuracy, and audio performance are downsides. On the other hand for those who value more balanced overall performance, they may opt for the Arzopa G1, which costs more.
